Information for MPF Adopt-a-Student Participants

The Michigan Pharmacy Foundation (MPF) Adopt-a-Student program will be held at the MPA Annual Convention & Exposition Feb. 24-26, 2012, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The Adopt-a-Student program provides Student MPA (SMPA) members the opportunity to network with Michigan’s pharmacy leaders during the Annual Convention and at the Annual Banquet held Saturday evening. The Adopt-a-Student program has been successful in years past, and we anticipate the program growing larger each year. Take advantage of this unique opportunity! Students in all years of pharmacy school are welcome to participate.

Student Instructions for Adopt-a-Student Program
Please follow these steps to sign up for adoption through the MPF Adopt-a-Student program. You must register for the Convention. Register online; complete a printable registration form; or call the MPA office at (517) 484-1466. Registration for SMPA members is complimentary. After Feb. 16, registration is $10. Be sure to mark that you’d like to participate in the Adopt-a-Student program under “Special Events.”

You must provide the following information on your registration form:

First and last name
E-mail address
College and year
Practice area preference

Student pharmacists that sign up to be adopted will be provided with the name and contact information of their “parent” so that they can make arrangements to meet with them at the Convention. Your parent will provide you with a reserved-seat banquet ticket either in person, or they may leave it at the Ambassador Relations Desk for you to pick up. Students are encouraged to sign up before Feb. 3 to ensure that you receive the name and contact information of the pharmacist who has adopted you. If you register after Feb. 3, you will receive the name and contact information for your parent on-site.

Annual Convention Registration Now Available Online

Registration is now available online for MPA’s premiere event of the year, the Annual Convention and Exposition. The 2012 Convention will be held Feb. 24-26 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

To be eligible for complimentary registration, student pharmacists must be a Student MPA member and submit a valid copy of his/her MPA membership card. Registration will not be accepted without this documentation. Nonmembers will be charged a $20 registration fee.

After Feb. 16 and onsite, registration will be $10 for members and $30 for nonmembers). The nonmember rate includes complimentary membership in Michigan Pharmacists Association for 2012. In addition, several special luncheons and other events held during the weekend require pre-registration, so be sure to take your time when completing the online registration or registration form to be sure you don’t miss anything.

Complete MPA’s 2011 Readership Survey for a Chance to Win a Gift Card

APhA Foundation Offering Student Scholarship

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Foundation Student Scholarship Program recognizes students who choose to invest their time in their school’s APhA-ASP chapter to help shape the future of the profession while managing the demands of a full-time pharmacy curriculum. Applicants will be evaluated on their potential to become leaders for the profession of pharmacy, as demonstrated by involvement in school and community activities and academic performance. This year, the Foundation will award twelve annual scholarships. The George F. Archambault scholarship is in the amount of $1,500. All other APhA Foundation Student Scholarships are in the amount of $1,000.

The 2012 Student Scholarship recipients will be recognized during the Foundation's Annual Contributors' Breakfast during the 2012 APhA Annual Meeting in New Orleans. Register for the Final Immunization Program of 2011 by Oct. 17

MPA is hosting one last Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Program this year on Oct. 27 at the MPA Family of Companies Headquarters in Lansing. Registrations must be received by Monday, Oct. 17.

This program provides a unique opportunity for pharmacists and student pharmacists to become certified immunizers, as well as offers eight hours of live continuing education credit. Registrants must complete a self-study prior to attending the live seminar.

2012-13 Fulbright Program Now Accepting Applications

The Fulbright Program is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide.

Students must be a U.S. citizen and have a bachelor's degree by the beginning date of the grant, but will not have a doctoral degree as of Oct. 17, 2011.

Last Chance to Submit Applications for CAPA Student Scholarship

Capital Area Pharmacists Association (CAPA) is offering up to two $500 student scholarships for individuals meeting certain criteria. The use of the scholarship is nonrestrictive and CAPA will award the winner(s) at its annual Michigan Pharmacy Week celebration, continuing education program and general meeting on Oct. 25.

To apply, complete an application and supply a letter of recommendation and proof of the requirements listed on the application. Those interested must apply by Sept. 30. Registration Now Available Online for the MSHP Annual Meeting

Registration is now available online for the upcoming Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Annual Meeting. The Meeting will be held Friday, Nov. 4 at the Suburban Collection Showplace (formerly the Rock Financial Showplace) in Novi.

Held each fall, the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Annual Meeting provides continuing education programs designed specifically for health-system pharmacists, residents, pharmacy technicians and student pharmacists.

At the end of this year’s MSHP Annual Meeting, participants should be able to explain the significance of the patient-centered medical home; discuss opioid pain dependency; and discuss current clinical issues involving cardiology, immunology and infectious diseases. Participants should also be able to describe how to start and expand residency programs; discuss management of delirium in patients in the intensive care unit setting; and discuss improving continuity of care.

Residents and student pharmacists receive complimentary registration through Oct. 24. After this date, a $10 registration fee will be assessed.

Student Pharmacists: Volunteer for Pharmacy Day at the Capitol!

The 2011 Pharmacy Day at the Capitol will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2011, on the south Capitol lawn of the Michigan State Capitol building in Lansing. Held every fall, Pharmacy Day at the Capitol is a key opportunity to educate legislators on the valuable role pharmacy professionals play in health care. Volunteers have one-on-one time during wellness demonstrations with Michigan's lawmakers to discuss important pharmacy issues and provide expertise in the following areas:

Blood glucose monitoring
Blood pressure monitoring
Immunizations
Healthy lifestyle practices
Emergency preparedness

In 2010, MPA also held the first Medication Disposal Event @ the Capitol, where participants were able to safely and responsibly dispose of medications, including controlled substance medications/narcotics. MPA is working with the Department of Environmental Quality to discuss holding another event in 2011.

Students MUST RSVP by Sept. 8 by filling out the online registration available to give the Association an accurate count of how many student volunteers to expect. A minimum understanding of basic pharmacy practice is needed to fulfill responsibilities at this event, therefore, any P1s volunteering will be assigned to assist with the medication disposal tent, lunch line and legislative office visits.

Attend MPA’s Upcoming Immunization Training Program in Troy

MPA is hosting several Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Programs this summer and fall. The next program will be held July 21 at the Somerset Inn in Troy. Participants have the opportunity to earn up to 20 hours of continuing education credit while training to become a certified immunizer.

This innovative and interactive training program teaches pharmacists the skills necessary to become a primary source for vaccine information and administration. The program also teaches the basics of immunology and focuses on practice implementation and legal/regulatory issues.

The training is conducted in two parts: a self-study that’s mailed to participants approximately four weeks before the program date and a live training seminar. Successful completion of the self-study will result in 12 hours of continuing education (CE) credit. In addition, successful completion of the live seminar will result in eight additional hours of live CE credit.

MPA is also holding two additional programs in 2011, including one designed specifically for Wayne State University student pharmacists. Graduates Encouraged to Take Advantage of Complimentary MPA Membership

The transition from a student pharmacist to a new practitioner is not always an easy one; however, the Association aims to make it easier by providing newly graduating student pharmacists with a free MPA membership through the end of their graduating year. In addition, MPA offers two membership levels, Pharmacist Conversion Step One and Pharmacist Conversion Step Two, for new practitioners to take advantage of discounted membership rates the two years following their graduation from pharmacy school.

Held each year, the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Residency Conference is designed for residency directors, preceptors, residents and student pharmacists committed to improving the residency experience.

The Sixth Annual MSHP Residency Conference will be held on Monday, June 6, 2011, at the Lexington Lansing Hotel from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m., with registration and continental breakfast beginning at 8:15 a.m. Lunch will be provided.

Educational programming will include a focus on leadership, research design, statistics, publishing and financial responsibility.

Support the Pharmacist Student Loan Repayment Eligibility Act of 2011

Senators Inouye (D-HI), Begich (D-AK) and Reed (D-RI) introduced the Pharmacist Student Loan Repayment Eligibility Act of 2011 (S.48). This bill would provide for the participation of pharmacists in the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) loan repayment program.

The purpose of this legislation is to increase patient access to patient-centered, team-based health care services for underserved populations. Specifically, this bill recognizes the vital role that clinical pharmacists play on the health care team by providing incentives for pharmacists to participate in the NHSC.

New Practitioners Attend Great Lakes Young Pharmacists Leadership Conference

MPA, in conjunction with Indiana Pharmacists Alliance and Ohio Pharmacists Association, held the Great Lakes Young Pharmacists Leadership Conference (GLYPLC) Oct. 15-17, 2010. Individuals were selected by MPA on the basis of several considerations to attend this event at the Maumee Bay Resort and Conference Center in Ohio. The goal of the leadership conference is to identify emerging leaders, enhance leadership skills of participants and provide motivation to seek greater awareness and involvement in issues confronting the profession. MPA would like to thank attendees for their participation in the conference.

Each year, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) recognizes student organizations, or Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP) societies, across the nation. For the 2010-11 year, both Ferris State University (FSU) and the University of Michigan (U-M) were among the recognized student chapters, receiving official ASHP-SSHP honors. Student organizations that complete the required criteria for this program each year receive a certificate of recognition; awards for the incoming and outgoing president/officer for their SSHP; one complimentary ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Summer Meeting student registration; one complimentary ASHP publication; and use of the ASHP-SSHP recognition logo. Volunteer for Pharmacy Day at the Capitol

MPA’s Pharmacy Day at the Capitol will be held Sept. 14, 2010, on the south Capitol lawn in Lansing. Student pharmacists are encouraged to volunteer to assist in demonstrating to government officials the important role pharmacists play on the health care team. Stations will be set up to provide blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose readings, immunizations, emergency preparedness information and more.

New this year, MPA is also holding the Medication Disposal Event @ the Capitol, where participants can safely and responsibly dispose of medications, including controlled substance medications/narcotics. For additional information on this event, visit MichiganPharmacists.org/medicationdisposal.

Students participating are encouraged to visit the event page on the MPA Web site to RSVP by Sept. 9 to give the Association an accurate count of how many student volunteers to expect. Be sure to indicate your work station preference as well as whether you’d like to participate in legislative office visits or a tour of the Capitol, or both.

Volunteers are also encouraged to utilize the student survival guide supplied by MPA for directions, parking information and details on what to wear, what to bring and your role in the event. A tentative agenda for the day is also available online.

Following the event, from 3-4 p.m., MPA will be holding a brief continuing quality improvement (CQI) meeting and student ice cream social at the new MPA Family of Companies Headquarters at 408 Kalamazoo Plaza in Lansing.

Receive Complimentary Registration to the MSHP Annual Meeting Through Oct. 25

The Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Annual Meeting provides a great opportunity for student pharmacists to network with pharmacy professionals, attend sessions on a variety of topics and learn about the latest products and services in the exhibit hall. Student pharmacists and residents receive complimentary registration to this event through Oct. 25. After that date, a $10 registration fee will be applied.

Program topics include techniques to increase patient safety; incident command procedures and real-life hospital incident response using the attempted Christmas day bombing in Detroit as an example; and clinical and leadership tracks focused on clinical pearls, technology, and anticoagulation and management issues. For the second year in a row, a CPR certification course is also being offered for an additional registration fee. This course will include adult, child and infant CPR, along with AED and obstructed airway management training. Attendees will be required to pre-register for this course.

At the Annual Town Hall Meeting, awards will be presented to deserving individuals or groups, and MSHP officers for the coming year will be announced.

Task Force Meets to Discuss Student Pharmacist Involvement in MPA

My name is Claire Lee and I am a P4 student pharmacist at Wayne State University. I am here at the MPA on rotation right now. I can honestly say I’m enjoying myself and that I’ve learned a lot about the MPA and the practice of pharmacy in general.

I recently had the opportunity to act as chair of the second annual Student MPA Task Force meeting. A total of eight students traveled from all three of Michigan’s colleges of pharmacy to MPA’s brand new building in Lansing. Topics discussed included student programming at the Annual Convention and Exposition, Pharmacy Day at the Capitol, general student involvement, and communication between MPA and students.

The meeting was highly productive and an interest was expressed on both sides for improved communication between staff at the MPA and student pharmacists at all three pharmacy institutions.

During our discussions, we realized that a lot could be gained through collaboration between students at Wayne State University, Ferris State University and the University of Michigan. By sharing ideas for patient care projects and resources for advocacy events, we can all work together toward a common goal. By working smarter through the sharing of information, the ‘re-invention of the wheel’ process can be reduced, or even eliminated in some cases.

Pharm.D.(evelopments) was originally developed as a place for students to blog. However, lack of interest has resulted in a transformation to a sort of student newsletter. Our new goal for this forum will be for student pharmacists to periodically post information about innovative programs taking place at their respective college of pharmacy. The hope is to work together to achieve the goals we have all set as individuals.

Student MPA Volunteers to Help Plan the 2011 Annual Convention & Exposition

Participate in Upcoming Immunization Programs

MPA will be hosting two additional Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery Programs this summer to provide interested participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a primary source of vaccine administration and information. The first program will be held July 26 at the Lexington Lansing Hotel, and the second will be held Aug. 24 at the new MPA headquarters at 408 Kalamazoo Plaza in Lansing.

Registrants will be mailed a self-study approximately four weeks prior to the live training. The self-study must be completed and submitted at registration on the program date. Successful completion of the self-study will result in eight hours of continuing education credit. Successful completion of the live seminar component will result in 12 hours of live continuing education credit, for a total of 20 hours for the entire program. Contest Specifics:

Student pharmacists, pharmacy residents and other MPA members are encouraged to create a one to three minute video highlighting the valuable role pharmacists play in patient health care.
The theme of the video should center around the tagline, “That’s My Pharmacist.” This is also the theme of a nationwide message campaign MPA has developed and will be releasing in 2010 and 2011.
Ideas for video content include patient interviews, recording in different pharmacy settings, pharmacist interviews, personal testimonials, etc.
Entries should be in a flash or mpeg standard video format.

More Than 1,300 Attend 2010 Annual Convention

The 2010 MPA Annual Convention & Exposition, held Feb. 26-28 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center, attracted more than 1,300 student pharmacists, pharmacists, technicians, academia and others. A variety of student events were held throughout the weekend, including the first Self-Care Challenge. Teams of three from each college of pharmacy competed in a Jeopardy-style game. The Self-Care Challenge winning team of Carrie Nelson, Valerie Franklin and Jessica Schultz from Ferris State University received a traveling trophy to display at their college.

On Saturday, the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) sponsored a student luncheon. A pharmacy leader sat at each table during the lunch to provide students the opportunity to network with professionals in the industry and ask questions about getting involved in the organization.

In addition, the Michigan Pharmacy Foundation hosted the adopt-a-student program once again, and is proud to announce that all 120 students were adopted this year. The MPA online forum was utilized to match up students with their “parents” prior to the convention, as opposed to matching them at the student social, which proved to be a successful change. Rather, the student social was a much more casual event, where students enjoyed light refreshments, mingled and played games.

A number of educational programming sessions were geared directly toward student members, including financial planning and the MPJE law review. Student pharmacists also assisted with presenting donation drive items to Mother Waddles Perpetual Mission during the convention’s Keynote Session.

MSHP to Hold Fifth Annual Residency Conference

The Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Residency Conference will be held June 7 at the Lexington Lansing Hotel. This day-long conference will feature several presentations on topics relevant to advancing residency experiences. MSHP President Terry Baumann will provide openings remarks, followed by the keynote session presented by Thomas Thielke, director of pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin. Pearl topics will close out the morning and then lunch will be provided. In the afternoon, attendees will hear two speakers, as well as participate in roundtable discussions on a variety of topics.

This program is designed for residency directors, preceptors, residents and students committed to improving the residency experience. Continuing education credit will not be awarded for this conference. Watch future MPA communications for registration information and further conference details.

Michigan Student Pharmacists Represented at APhA Annual Meeting

MPA was active at the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Annual Meeting & Exposition March 12-15 in Washington, D.C., hosting events and providing networking opportunities for student pharmacists. Through sponsorship by Michigan Pharmacy Foundation (MPF), students from each Michigan college of pharmacy were able to attend the Political Leadership Breakfast. Students in attendance through the MPF sponsorship included Janelle Turino, Kimberly Betters, Megan Hansen, Clayton Gilde, Charles Makowski, Claire Lee and Kim Claeys. Claire Lee also sits on the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) Policy Review Committee and represented Michigan as a delegate to the APhA House of Delegates. Students were also invited to a luncheon hosted by MPA at Finn and Porter restaurant on March 13.

Jennifer Lins, a P4 student pharmacist at the University of Michigan, was recognized in the 7th Annual One to One Patient Counseling Competition. Lins worked on a clinical psychiatric rotation in the summer of 2009 and was recognized for counseling a patient hospitalized for mania.

2010 WMSHP Scholarship

The Western Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (WMSHP) is offering a nonrenewable scholarship for P3 student pharmacists. Two scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 to P3 students attending a Michigan college of pharmacy. The deadline to submit an application is March 31, 2010. The 2010 MPA Annual Convention & Exposition will be held Feb. 26-28, 2010, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The convention provides more than 50 continuing education programs; an exhibit hall to network with pharmacy professionals and learn of new products and services; and a banquet and awards ceremony to honor leaders in Michigan pharmacy. MPA provides special programming for student pharmacists covering a wide range of topics. This year, some program topics of interest include financial planning and the Student Pharmacist Self-care Championship. There will also be special events for those attending from the three colleges of pharmacy, including the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Student Luncheon; a Student Social, where student pharmacists will be encouraged to support their college by wearing their school’s colors; and participation in the Adopt-a-Student program where they are “adopted” by pharmacy professionals to establish an ongoing networking relationship.

Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship
MPA is proud to present the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Alliance (NMA) Student Pharmacist Self-care Championship. Up to three teams from each college can compete head-to-head, with the winning team from each college of pharmacy advancing to a final round of questions, similar to how the game show Jeopardy is played. The winning college will receive a traveling trophy to exhibit at their college of pharmacy for the year.

MSHP Student Pharmacist Luncheon
Join your classmates and future colleagues on Saturday, Feb. 27 from noon-1:20 p.m. in the Ambassador Ballroom #1 (Level 3) at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. This luncheon is sponsored by the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP). A ticket is required, and pre-registration is necessary. Onsite registrations for this luncheon event will not be accepted. Make sure to mark this event on your registration form or online registration in order to attend. For student pharmacists that attended this event at last year’s Annual Convention, please note that the room has changed. By using the Ambassador Ballroom #1, MSHP will be able to seat all registered lunch guests in one room.

Student pharmacists are invited to stop by this informal reception from 7-10:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26. Enjoy drinks and appetizers, and network with fellow student pharmacists from the other Michigan colleges of pharmacy. The theme this year is “school colors,” so be sure to wear your college apparel. Wayne State University Team Wins Student Clinical Skills Competition

The 2009 Student Clinical Skills Competition was held at the MSHP Annual Meeting Nov. 6 in Novi. Winning teams of clinical skills competitions held at each Michigan college of pharmacy were presented with an award honoring their efforts. The overall winners of the competition were Jennifer Hagopian and Lindsay Lessl from Wayne State University. These winners advanced to the national competition at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting Dec. 6-10, 2009, in Las Vegas. Congratulations to the team from WSU and all other student pharmacists who participated in last year’s competition!

Great Lakes Young Pharmacists Leadership Conference

MPA, in conjunction with the Indiana Pharmacists Alliance and Ohio Pharmacists Association, held the Great Lakes Young Pharmacists Leadership Conference (GLYPLC) Oct. 2-4, 2009. Individuals were selected by MPA on the basis of several considerations to attend this event at the Maumee Bay Resort and Conference Center in Ohio. The goal of the leadership conference is to identify emerging leaders, enhance leadership skills of participants and provide motivation to seek greater awareness and involvement in issues confronting the profession. U-M Holds Pharmacy Picnic

The University of Michigan held a Pharmacy Picnic on Sept. 28. MPA Director of Marketing & Sales La Vone Swanson and Director of Governmental Affairs Greg Baran attended, along with more than 100 student pharmacists, faculty and guests. Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship at 2010 Annual Convention

MPA is pleased to announce that the Student Pharmacist Self-care Championship will be held during the upcoming 2010 Annual Convention & Exposition, Feb. 26-28. Up to three teams of three will compete head-to-head, with winners from each Michigan college of pharmacy moving on to a final round of questions, similar to how the game show Jeopardy is played. The winning college will receive a traveling trophy to exhibit at their college of pharmacy for the year. Since 2006, the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Alliance (NMA) have partnered in a continuing education event which promotes interactive learning of self-care topics.

The 2010 MPA Annual Convention & Exposition will be held Feb. 26-28, 2010, at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The convention provides more than 60 continuing education programs; an exhibit hall to network with pharmacy professionals and learn of new products and services; and a banquet and awards ceremony to honor leaders in Michigan pharmacy.

MPA provides special educational programming for student pharmacists covering a wide range of topics. This year, some program topics of interest include financial planning and CV and resume writing skills. There will also be special events for those attending from the three colleges of pharmacy, including the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) luncheon; a Student Social, where student pharmacists will be encouraged to support their college by wearing their school’s colors; and a Self-Care Challenge. Students may also participate in the Adopt-a-Student program where they are “adopted” by pharmacy professionals to establish an ongoing networking relationship. Specific programming and event information, including registration, will be on MPA’s Web site as it becomes available.

The Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) is holding its Annual Meeting Nov. 6 at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi. Student pharmacists and residents can attend the event free if they register by Oct. 26. After Oct. 26, a $10 registration fee will apply.

The Keynote Session will feature Andrew Remington, MBA, who will give a patient’s perspective on health care. Other programming will include a management roundtable discussion about the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, National Patient Safety Goal (NPSG) 3E, health and health care preparedness and technician certification; a clinical track on blood factor products; a general session on opioids in chronic nonmalignant pain; and more.

There will also be a residency breakfast, complimentary to residents and MSHP members, which is designed for directors, preceptors, current residents and individuals interested in starting a residency program. Student Pharmacists Participate in Vaccine Awareness Presentations

At a June East Paris Business Association meeting, Ferris State University student pharmacists Melissa Brockway and Janeane Wilson participated in a shingles and Zostavax^® vaccine presentation with pharmacist Patti Smeelink of East Paris Pharmacy. Information on the disease and vaccine was given, and members were encouraged to share this information with residents of the community.

Student pharmacist interns Nkem Obiaga and Dan Nawara also provided general information about shingles to the residents of Porter Hills Retirement Community and answered questions regarding the vaccine. These Ferris State University student pharmacists collaborated with staff at Porter Hills to acquire transportation for residents to East Paris Pharmacy in the Grand Rapids area where the shingles vaccine is administered. In addition to promoting vaccination awareness, the interns were accompanied by Kristen Rider, a certified pharmacy technician who is experienced in diabetic shoes and Jobst support stockings offered at the pharmacy.

Student MPA Applications on Campus

This year, student pharmacists will be able to join Student MPA simply by filling out an application for membership either using the brochures located on campus, distributed by faculty at various meetings, or by going online to MichiganPharmacists.org and renew or join. Remember that there are two categories for dues, a one-year membership for $10 or the $25 membership for the complete time you're enrolled in pharmacy school.

Students Meet in Lansing to Plan 2010 Convention Activities

On July 20, 13 Student MPA volunteers met with MPA Chief Executive Officer Larry Wagenknecht, Chief Operations Officer Dianne Miller and other MPA staff members to offer suggestions and insights into the planning for the student programming for the 2010 MPA Annual Convention & Exposition, being held at the Detroit Marriot at the Renaissance Center Feb. 26-28.

Working their way through a packed agenda were Danielle Brownlee, Shawn Depcinski, Dan Hedgcock, Emily Jacobs, Lindsey Simonetti, Jennifer Cena, Jody Gembarski, Steve Hsueh, Rachael Ng, Claire Lee and Cathryn Poll.

Adopt-a-Student Brainstorm
The group identified three main goals of this program.

MPA Goal of Program = Establish a system where students are able to go to banquet at no cost as benefit of SMPA membership
Parent Goal of Participation = Support student as an alumni, network, recruit and establish an ongoing relationship
Student Goal of Participation = networking with pharmacists

Discussion then followed providing suggestions for improving the process next year.

Student Reception
The students suggested making the student reception even more casual with little structure so people could come and go. Other ideas included staying at the hotel, a Euchre tournament, placing one person from each school in charge of an activity, a hotel bar package, DJ, karaoke and others.

MSHP Student Luncheon
Last year, there was an overflow in the MSHP Student Luncheon attendance, with more than 100 compared with the 60 or so from previous years. The group suggested that it needs to be communicated to students if their RSVP is not accepted, remove the online registration link when the luncheon is full, advertise that it is focused on health-system/residency and clarify who gets into the student luncheon in advance.

Student Challenge
MPA staff discussed a new Student Program that they would like to offer at the Annaul Convention: the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations (NASPA) and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy (NMA) Student Pharmacist Self-care Championship. MPA would become the 29th state association to offer this program to students. The game is based on the popular format of Jeopardy featuring teams from the colleges of pharmacy. Each school competes against each other with the winning team moving on to compete against the winning teams from the other colleges. At the end of this round, the team with the highest score will win the traveling trophy and bragging rights for a year.

The group also brainstormed other options for student programming at the Annual Convention and how MPA could meet the needs of students.

Following the meeting, many of the students and staff joined MPA President Jim Vander Linde for a Lansing Lugnuts baseball game.

Thanks to all the students for volunteering their time to make the 2010 MPA Annual Convention & Exposition a success.

Student Patient Counseling Competition

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Michigan Pharmacists Association conducted the National Patient Counseling Competition at University of Michigan College of Pharmacy.

These U of M pharmacy students participated in this event.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, the Michigan Pharmacists Association conducted the National Patient Counseling Competition at Ferris State University College of Pharmacy.

These FSU pharmacy students participated in this event.

MSHP Clinical Skills Competition Winner

The Michigan Pharmacy Foundation (MPF) is pleased to host the Adopt-a-Student program through a special fundraising event again this year. Student MPA members and other students can now sign-up to be adopted when registering for the 2009 MPA Annual Convention & Exposition. Simply check the Adopt-a-Student box on your registration form before submitting. Student MPA members can register for free, if registered prior to Feb. 5, 2009.

The purpose of the Adopt-a-Student program is to enable student pharmacists to attend the MPA Annual Banquet on Saturday, Feb 28, while networking with pharmacy professionals.

Immediately following the MPA Student Pharmacist Social, jump on the People Mover and head for Greektown. Join friends, colleagues and new friends for dancing and partying into the night.

Fishbones in Greektown is a "hot spot" for locals and vistors alike. This location boasts two sprawling bars, multi-level seating and live music. On Friday nights Fishbones kicks it up a notch, bringing out some of Metro Detroit's best musicians to perform at the foot of the atrium waterfall. Performing on Feb. 27 will be the Dan Rafferty Band, a young, dynamic, eight-piece group.

Michigan Pharmacists Association conducts an annual Pharmacy Intern Economic Survey to gather information about intern salaries and work benefits. This survey provides pharmacy students with information useful for internship selections and salary negotiations. The results of this survey will be published in the March/April edition of Michigan Pharmacist.

Dean's Professionalism Award Recipients

The Dean's Professionalism Award was established by MPA in 1987 to honor a student who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to the achievement of high standards for the advancement of the ethics and professionalism of pharmacy. The deans of each of the Michigan colleges of pharmacy select a recipient. This year's winners are Brenda Schulz (FSU), Dominic Tran (U-M) and Natalie Pirkola (WSU).

Look for Changes at 2009 Convention

The 2009 Annual Convention & Exposition (ACE) will be held Feb. 28-March 1. Those of you who have attended the event before will notice the venue has been changed in response to attendee feedback. The 2009 event will be held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. This marks an exciting change that will offer more opportunities for entertainment, as well numerous restaurant choices.

However, the location isn’t the only aspect that will be improved. Student pharmacists will be happy to discover new and expanded events especially for them. In particular, MPA is proud to provide special programming for pharmacy students of the colleges of pharmacy at Ferris State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University. The ACE provides intensive continuing education programming designed to prepare pharmacy professionals for the future. Topics cover a wide range of health and practice setting issues to meet your desired professional needs.

MSHP Invites You to Its Annual Meeting

The Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) Annual Meeting is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 14, and will take place at the Radisson Hotel in Lansing. The day will include educational opportunities, networking and exhibits for viewing. The MSHP Annual Meeting brings pharmacists, pharmacy residents, student pharmacists and pharmacy technicians together, which makes it a perfect opportunity to network with other professionals.

The event is free for students and residents who register before the Oct. 27 deadline. All registrants will automatically be entered to win prizes throughout the day. Register online now.

After registration and continental breakfast in the exhibit hall, the keynote session, entitled "How to Get Paid for Clinical Services," will be presented by Daniel Buffington, Pharm.D., of Clinical Pharmacology Services. Other clinical topics include management of headaches and clinical pearls. The leadership track will include "Meet the Experts Roundtable: Emergency Preparedness, Competencies, USP <797>, Medication Disposal" and "Bar Coding: Ready, Set, Go." Everyone is also invited to attend the Town Hall Meeting in the afternoon.

This year, the meeting will again include an exhibit hall for participants to explore new pharmacy products and services and talk with representatives. The day provides plenty of time to visit the exhibits and make valuable contacts while learning the latest pharmacy information.
